Board handles personnel issues before state deadline

The Bexley Board of Education met in special session Sunday, July 7, in order to approve a number of personnel changes for the 2013-14 school year.

Although the early morning session lasted less than a half hour, district officials said it was essential in order to meet one of the state's deadlines for new hires.

Board President Carol Fey, along with members Mike Denison and Melissa Lacroix, unanimously approved one resignation, one leave of absence, and six new hires -- all to replace teachers either retiring, taking a leave of absence, or who have been reassigned.

The board held the special meeting in order to meet a July 10 deadline set forth by the state, marking the last day for termination of teaching contracts by a teacher without the need for consent by the teacher's board of education.

Only three of the Bexley school board members were in attendance, but they provided the necessary quorum in order to approve the new hires.

Also at Sunday's special meeting, board members accepted the resignation of Heath Goolsby, Bexley High School's assistant girls basketball coach, and Malikeya Khantrece, the middle school's head fall-winter cheerleading coach.

The next regular board meeting is set for Monday, July 15, in the Cassingham Complex community room, 326 S. Cassingham Road.
