While children are enjoying the last days of summer vacation before school starts, city of Bexley Recreation and Parks Department officials are hoping they'll consider giving up a few hours of leisure for a little healthy competition.
The department will host the first Splish, Splash and Dash Bexley Youth Triathlon on Saturday, Aug. 17. The triathlon will begin in the Clifton Shelter House, 2100 Clifton Ave., and will require participants to complete a swimming, biking and running course.
The event was funded by a $4,000 grant from the Bexley Community Foundation's Youth and Recreation Fund.
"It was something we'd discussed doing for a while, and partnering with the community foundation allowed us to do it," said Michael Price, recreation and parks director.
With age divisions ranging from younger than 6 years old to 14 years old, varying distances have been selected for each leg.
The course will include laps at the David H. Madison Community Pool, biking through the streets of north Bexley, and finishing with a run through Jeffrey Park.
The Recreation and Parks Department will monitor how participants perform during each leg and determine if the distances should be adjusted in future years, Price said.
"It will be something that we evaluate based on the results this year," he said.
Advance registration for the event is $25 and continues through noon Aug. 16; registration on the day of the event will be accepted from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. at a cost of $30.
The department also is seeking volunteers to help with the event.
"This event is not possible without volunteers," Price said.
