Taste of Bexley
Restaurants eager to feed a crowd
A variety of cuisine from local restaurants and vendors from other parts of the city are scheduled to take part in the 2013 Taste of Bexley, set Oct. 14.
The event will run from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Franklin Park Conservatory, 1777 E. Broad St.
When planning the event, organizers first approach local restaurants, then reach out to vendors outside Bexley, said Greg Margulis of the Bexley Area Chamber of Commerce, which presents the event.
"We always ask the restaurants that are in Bexley first and the ones that did it last year, and then we go beyond that," he said.
With a ticket, attendees can sample unlimited cuisine from all the participating restaurants. Attendees can expect local favorites such as Bexley Pizza Plus, Cafe Istanbul and the Rusty Bucket Tavern.
The Taste of Bexley provides an opportunity for restaurants to raise their visibility, said Andy Martinkovic, general manager of Rusty Bucket, 2158 E. Main St.
"We're showing that we are here to benefit the community," he said. "We support Capital University, Bexley High School and other schools. We want people to know that you see our names on your scoreboards, and this is who we are if you haven't been (to the restaurant) before."
New participating restaurants this year include Bexley Chocolatier, Tasi Cafe, Taste of Belgium and the Mad Greek. Restaurants from outside of Bexley and live entertainment tend to draw non-Bexley residents to the Taste of Bexley, said Colleen Krupp, chairwoman of the event.
"It's family-friendly. We do have a kids' area where kids can enjoy face painting and games," she said. "It's a fun event, and it's a value. You get (access to) the whole conservatory with the ticket. All the exhibits will be open. You have the whole gamut of that as well."
Celebrity judges will be on hand to select the Judge's Choice Awards. Those judges include: Joe Blundo, Columbus Dispatch; Johnny DiLoretto, Gateway Film Center; Dimitrious Stanley, BrightStar, Source Fitness and former Ohio State University football star; Shelley Mann, Umami Consulting; Steve Biro, "The Coach", Woody Hayes impersonator; and Bexley Mayor Ben Kessler.
Entertainment will include the Red Buds; Elijah Aaron; Carroll Baker, Magic Man; Ian Hummell, Captain Captain; and Bill Bendler and Friends. The event also will feature a raffle, and guests will have the opportunity to bid on a variety of special items.
Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door, $5 for children younger than 12.
Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Bexley Area Chamber of Commerce office, 2770 E. Main St., Suite 5, and at Bexley Pizza Plus, 2651 E. Main St., and the Bexley Coffee Shop, 492 N. Cassady Ave.
