* Dr. Britt Soden McCarthy, a general dentist in Bexley, has been awarded the N. Wayne Hiatt Rising Star Award from the Ohio Dental Association.

* Dr. Britt Soden McCarthy, a general dentist in Bexley, has been awarded the N. Wayne Hiatt Rising Star Award from the Ohio Dental Association.

The award recognizes a young leader in dentistry with outstanding leadership and initiative and a strong commitment to volunteerism within the community and the profession. This person must demonstrate promise for continued and future accomplishments within the dental profession, and must have been in practice for 10 years or less.

McCarthy received the award Sept. 20 at the Callahan Celebration of Excellence in conjunction with the ODA Annual Session. McCarthy was recognized for her contributions to and involvement with organized dentistry at an early point in her career.

McCarthy attended dental school at Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine and received her DMD Cum Laude in 2006.

She is active in numerous councils and advocacy programs of the Ohio Dental Association and Columbus Dental Society, and has been involved in organized dentistry since she was a dental student. She also participates in community service activities, including the Give Kids a Smile Program and she is a Dental OPTIONS provider.

* Jake Fried, a 2002 Bexley High School graduate, recently was selected as the lead artist for the Artist Project at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, where he has been teaching as an instructor in the Artful Adventures program.

Fried, an artist, animator and educator, has taught as part of the program since 2007. He studied painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art and art history at Boston University. Originally known for his paintings, he has spent recent years working on a series of hand-drawn, experimental animations or "moving paintings."

His films have been exhibited at numerous museums, including the Tate Modern, and galleries in New York City, Berlin and Copenhagen, among others. They have also screened at international film festivals including the Sundance Film Festival, San Francisco Film Festival and Cannes Lions.
