Carvi cooking up ideas for school meals
Bexley's school cafeterias are under new leadership as Juliana Carvi took over the reins of food service director, replacing the retired James Anderson.
She has quickly gotten her bearings and instituted some changes in Bexley's cafeterias.
The salad bar is completely different, and soup is now available daily, with some new offerings full of enough vegetables that they meet the federal requirements for a full half-cup vegetable serving.
Staff members are being lured into the cafeteria to check out the changes as Carvi recently distributed "free drink with meal purchase" coupons around the Cassingham Complex.
Having started the job on Aug. 1, Carvi comes with lots of food services and education experience. She worked for the Ohio School for the Deaf for 13 years, having the additional responsibility in the final three years for food services at the adjacent Ohio State School for the Blind. She holds both a master's of business administration degree and a Certificate of Public Management and has also worked in the restaurant business.
"We are striving to expand students' tastes while at the same time offering favorites," Carvi said in a district press release.
The cafeterias have been adding more fruits and vegetable; all of the grains are "whole grain rich" or 100 percent whole grain. Middle and high school students can choose up to four fruit or vegetable sides, an entree and milk.
Carvi's plans for the months ahead include working with the district's Health & Wellness committee to expand "Try It Tuesdays" to Bexley Middle School and Bexley High School, and getting more students to eat in the cafeterias.
