Familiar stories of Dorothy, Sally to be on the big screen

Bexley's Main Event summer movie series will feature its first adults-only event -- a "Date Night" presentation of When Harry Met Sally.

The Main Event "Date Night" on Aug. 23 is being offered in addition to the regularly scheduled showing of The Wizard of Oz on Aug. 15.

The Main Event features movies on a large outdoor screen, live music and recreational activities on Capital University's East Main Street lawn. This series made its debut last summer and continued this year with an $18,925 grant from the Bexley Community Foundation.

For "Date Night," the event will move temporarily to Jeffrey Park, 165 N. Parkview Ave. The film will start around 8:30 p.m. on the park lawn. Live music and food trucks will be featured and attendees are welcome to bring picnics.

The "Date Night" is an alternative to the usual Main Event movies, which are geared toward children, Bexley Mayor Ben Kessler said.

"This idea was really inspired by several requests from residents for a movie night out for adults," he said.

"Date Night" is being held on a Saturday, instead of Friday, and Jeffrey Park was selected as an alternate location so that attendees will know they're in for something different, Kessler said.

"We decided to feature Jeffrey Park as a location to differentiate the concept a little bit and provide a unique backdrop for the 'Date Night' concept," he said.

The Aug. 15 screening of The Wizard of Oz will be held at Capital. The evening will feature Oz-themed activities, music by The Professors and food vendors. The Bexley Recreation and Parks Department will offer games for children and families, the Bexley Public Library will have a storytime for young children, and Ultimate Party Event will provide inflatable rides. The evening will start at 6:30 p.m. with the movie at sunset.

The final Main Event for the season will be Sept. 19 with a showing of The Lego Movie and the Bexley's Got Talent competition.
