At the annual Bexley Shop Hop, set for Saturday, Nov. 7, at Jeffrey Mansion, 165 N. Parkview Ave., visitors can support local businesses while contributing to a good cause.

The Bexley Shop Hop is a fundraiser for the Bexley Recreation Scholarship Fund and local nonprofit organization Developmental Assets Resource Network. The organization provides a number of services for Bexley students and families in need, including food, winter coats, school supplies, medical needs and school-related fees for those referred by Bexley school counselors.

"There is more income diversity in Bexley than people realize," said Marguerethe Jaede, one of the Shop Hop organizers and a DARN board member. "Because Bexley is in general a very affluent community, there is often a lack of awareness of people who have financial need. In a place where there's more low-income families, there are also generally more resources and awareness about providing support. In Bexley, that isn't always the case."

One of the programs the Shop Hop benefits is the Jeffrey Summer camp scholarship program for 18 children whose families wouldn't otherwise be able to afford camp.

"We are very thankful for all the work that DARN does for our community," Bexley Recreation Director Michael Price said. "The DARN organization is very supportive of the Recreation and Parks scholarship program, providing thousands of dollars a year to the scholarship program. Much of the great work that DARN does is possible because of the money they raise through the Shop Hop. On top of all that, the Pre-Hop Party is a ton of fun."

The Pre-Hop Party is scheduled from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at Jeffrey Mansion, featuring hors d'oeuvres, desserts, drinks, dancing, a silent auction with select vendor goods and a signature "Winter Wonderland" cocktail. The party theme encourages participants to wear ski lodge attire.

Tickets for the Pre-Hop Party can be purchased in advance for $50 at Bexleyshophop.com, or at the door for $60.

The all-day Shop Hop will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. For a $5 entry fee, participants can choose from a variety of merchandise from 30 vendors, including home furnishings and antiques, artwork, clothing, jewelry and food items.

"This is a great opportunity to get some holiday shopping done," Kelly Salmon, another DARN volunteer, said in a news release.
