Basketball team jelling going into tourney
The St. Charles Preparatory School basketball team is playing its best at the right time of the season.
The Cardinals handed Watterson its first CCL loss with a 51-36 decision Feb. 10 and then earned their highest Division I district seed at the tournament draw Feb. 12.
St. Charles selected 19th of 42 teams and opens tournament play at 6 p.m. Feb. 24 at Marysville against Zanesville, which had the 14th selection. The winner will play a second-round game against Dresden Tri-Valley or Pickerington North at 7:45 p.m. Feb. 29 at Marysville.
“We came in and got our highest seed in Division I and we’re almost fully healthy,” said coach Jacob Daniel, whose team has won 10 of its last 13 contests. “This is the first time we’ve ever been seeded in the top 20. But we have to be focused on Hartley right now.”
The Cardinals, who are 12-5 overall, play Friday, Feb. 17, at Hartley to close the CCL schedule. On Jan. 20, St. Charles came up short in a half-court struggle with the Hawks, losing 26-24. Dan Hennessey had eight points, eight rebounds and four blocks, and Jimmy Ryan added five points.
St. Charles closes the regular season Saturday, Feb. 18, at Springfield Catholic Central, a team it beat 52-33 last season.
Daniel said the Cardinals played their best game of the season in the second meeting with Watterson. The Eagles won the first game 42-31 on Jan. 13.
“It was a great win against a great team on senior night for us,” Daniel said. “We had a reunion for the 1992 team that finished 25-2 and lost to (Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph) in the (Division II) state final. And that must have done something for us because we played our best game so far this season.”
Ryan scored 16 points and Michel Lutter added 11 points.
Despite the loss, Watterson clinched at least a share of the league title. The Eagles are 6-1 followed by Hartley (4-2), St. Charles (4-3), DeSales (2-5) and Ready (1-6).
“Watterson has a really good team, and they deserved to win the league,” Daniel said. “They have done a great job all year and are the deepest team in the league. That’s why they won it.”
The Cardinals defeated Groveport 66-29 on Feb. 11. Ryan scored 19 points with five 3-pointers and Hennessey added 13 points.
On Feb. 4, the Cardinals lost to Olentangy Orange 54-39. Dan Hennessey scored 12 points and Sean Hennessey and Bryce Spees both added six points.
Ryan scored 16 points and Lutter added 10 points as St. Charles defeated Ready 46-31 on Jan. 31.
•The swimming team finished second (300) in a Division I sectional meet Feb. 11 at Upper Arlington behind champion UA (397.5).
The Cardinals advanced all three relays and 20 individuals to the district meet on Saturday, Feb. 18, at Ohio State.
The top two individuals and relays in each district event automatically will advance to the state meet, which is Feb. 23-25 at Branin Natatorium in Canton. Sixteen at-large qualifiers will be selected for each event based on times from all the district meets.
“For us, it was just about qualifying on to the district meet and not making any mistakes,” coach Geoff Gear said. “We just want to get on to the district. (The sectional) was not a huge moment for us. We didn’t have much adrenaline. It was kind of a flat performance for us.”
One of the best events for the Cardinals was the 100-yard breaststroke in which they had three competitors finish in the top four.
Junior Nick McKinley was second in 1 minute, 2.93 seconds for the fifth seed at district. Senior Chris D’Angelo was third (1:03.13) for the seventh seed and Tyler Welty was fourth (1:03.38) for the ninth seed. Senior Eamon Cleary also qualified for district, seeded 15th with a time of 1:04.45.
“The 100 breaststroke is one of the strongest events for our team this year,” D’Angelo said.
“It’s a big confidence booster because you race against these guys in practice. As much as I want to beat the guys from the other team, I want to beat my teammates even more.”
D’Angelo said the Cardinals are prepared for district.
“The focus of the sectional meet is to get on to the district,” D’Angelo said. “We’re not looking at times, but the people we are racing. I think we did a great job of racing.”
St. Charles finished second (347) behind UA (432) in the district meet last season. The Cardinals had won the five previous district titles.
