Senior Patrick Kelly will look to contribute to the best season in the history of the Hartley High School boys swimming and diving program when he and his teammates compete in the Division II state meet.

One memory that he helped create — although he missed out on some of the celebration — was the runner-up finish the Hawks earned at district Feb. 17 at Ohio State.

Because of a temporary scoring error, it originally was believed that Grandview had finished second and the Hawks third.

A recalculation concluded it was Hartley that would receive the runner-up trophy — the first in program history.

Kelly already had left the pool by that time.

“It was really exciting,” Kelly said. “I actually left before the trophy was given to us. One of my coaches texted me to tell me about it, which was weird because the diving was still going on as they were giving out the trophy.”

Kelly is among several boys and girls who are representing the Hawks at the state meet in Canton’s Branin Natatorium.

Senior Becky Hunold competed in girls diving Feb. 22 after earning a runner-up finish (331.9 points) at district. She was seeded 13th for state.

The remainder of the Hawks will swim Thursday, Feb. 23, in preliminaries, with the boys and girls swimming finals at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24.

Kelly was first at district in the 100-yard backstroke (53.36 seconds, sixth seed at state) and the 200 individual medley (1:55.91, sixth seed). Junior Ronnie Bolden won the 50 freestyle (21.52, third seed) and the 100 butterfly (50.96, fifth seed).

Also moving on to state were the 200 free relay of Bolden, Kelly and freshmen Michael Bungard and Patrick Lawrence (1:31.86, fifth) and the 200 medley relay of the same four (1:42.99, third). The 200 free relay is seeded 21st and the 200 medley relay is 24th.

Last season, the boys placed 11th (66) of 56 teams that scored at state as Hunting Valley University School (377) won the title.

“We have so many more boys this year that we have a unity and our own identity,” Kelly said. “We have our own boys team. In my previous three years, we just had a couple guys.”

“Seven years ago we didn’t even have a boys team,” coach Tony Phillips said. “We’re pleased to get a district runner-up finish.”

Senior Jessica Carpenter was third in the 100 free (53.24, 14th seed) and second in the 100 fly (56.83, fifth seed) at district to help her team finish fourth.

Winning a district title and earning a second seed was junior Andrea Cottrell in the 200 IM (2:05.29).

Carpenter, Cottrell, junior Hope Kahrig and sophomore Alexa Williams advanced in the 200 free relay (1:42.8, fourth), as did the 200 medley relay of freshman Lauren Bailey, Carpenter, Cottrell and Kahrig (1:49.86, third). The 200 free relay is seeded 22nd and the 200 medley relay is seventh.

Last season, the Hawks were seventh (86) of 56 teams that scored at state as Gates Mills Hawken (334) won the title.

“I thought our team did well, and we were really excited to see the boys get second,” Carpenter said. “This year we’re really excited because we’re taking a lot of girls to state.”

•The girls basketball team opened the Division II district tournament with a 52-44 win over Amanda-Clearcreek on Feb. 18 at Pickerington North.

The Hawks will play Whitehall at 2:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at North, with the winner to face Independence or Mifflin in a district semifinal at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29, at North.

While Hartley is the second seed, Whitehall is seeded ninth and is 14-7 after opening the postseason with a 36-34 win over Buckeye Valley on Feb. 18.

Nicole Orr is a 5-foot-9 sophomore guard who scored a team-high 16 points against the Barons. Senior Kayla Persinger had eight points.

Hartley beat Whitehall 48-40 on Feb. 1.

“We had a heck of a game with Whitehall and they got the ninth seed,” coach Mike Lanza said. “There’s not a lot of difference between any of the top-10 seeds. This year it’s a very even field.”
