Volleyball squad falls to top-seeded Bloom-Carroll

The Columbus School for Girls volleyball team went on the road Oct. 17 and beat Johnstown 22-25, 25-20, 15-25, 25-19, 15-13 in the first round of the Division III district tournament.

In that match, Ellie Thompson averaged six kills per game, while Autumn Pu, Carly Green and Erin McGuire each averaged four kills per game.

On Oct. 20, the Unicorns lost to top-seeded Bloom-Carroll 25-2, 25-8, 25-8 to finish 3-21 overall. CSG also went 0-8 in the CCL.

Coach David Mitchell was proud CSG won its tournament opener.

"Senior middle hitter Ellie Thompson and junior middle hitter Autumn Pu stressed the Johnstown defense while opening up opportunities for senior outside hitter Carly Green and freshman Erin McGuire," Mitchell said. "After the loss in (game) three, Ellie Thompson had a nine-point serving run followed by senior setter Maddie McGregor with a run of five points, keeping us in the match. Maddie also had a five-point serving run in (game) five.

"(Our) defense was probably the best it has been all season with only five unforced defensive errors the whole match, with Maddie, Carly and freshman libero Kaitlyn Yale digging most balls off the floor."

Cross country team reaches regional

The cross country team advanced to the Division III regional Saturday, Oct. 27, at Pickerington North by scoring 77 points to finish third in the six-team district 1 meet Oct. 20 at Watkins Memorial behind Mount Gilead (44) and Fredericktown (51).

Competing for the Unicorns were Emma Harris (sixth, 20 minutes, 58.01 seconds), Alyssa Sugar (11th, 21:45.86), Abigail Perrini (20th, 22:55.12), Katelyn Lennon (21st, 22:55.79), Ellie Wade (22nd, 22:56.19), Julia Mackessy (33rd, 24:08) and Erin Balasky (35th, 24:15.23).

The top four teams and top 16 individuals at district advanced to regional, where the top four teams and top 16 individuals will qualify for the state meet Nov. 3 at National Trail Raceway.

On Oct. 13, CSG finished third (75) in the CCL meet at the Westerville Recreation Center behind Watterson (49) and DeSales (53) and ahead of Ready (76) and Hartley (90).

Doubles team goes 1-1 at state

Senior Tiffany Lau and sophomore Mary Anne Click of the tennis team went 1-1 in doubles in the Division II state tournament, which was held Oct. 19 at Ohio State and Elysium Tennis Center in Plain City and Oct. 20 at Elysium.

Click and Lau opened with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4) victory over Toledo Ottawa Hills' Shivani Bhatt and Lilli Boice before losing to Gates Mills Hawkens' Sydney Green and Emily Leizman 2-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 in the second round.

Field hockey squad loses district opener

The field hockey team opened the district tournament Oct. 18 with a 10-0 loss at Olentangy Liberty.

CSG finished 4-11-1 overall and 4-6-1 in the Central Ohio Field Hockey League.

Soccer team ousted from tournament

After losing its final two games of the regular season, the soccer team opened the Division III district tournament with a 4-3 win at Fisher Catholic on Oct. 15.

The Unicorns then lost at top-seeded Ready 5-0 in the second round Oct. 18.

CSG finished 4-12-2 overall and 0-4 in the CCL.
