Rooney finishes fifth at state wrestling meet
St. Charles Preparatory School sophomore Tim Rooney finished fifth at 126 pounds in the Division I state wrestling tournament, which was held Feb. 28 through March 2 at Ohio State.
He defeated Lakewood St. Edward's Chance Driscoll 3-1 in sudden-victory overtime in a fifth-place match to become the program's first sophomore to reach the state podium.
Rooney went 4-2 at state to finish 39-4. The Cardinals tied Hilliard Darby for 44th (11) behind champion St. Edward (117) as 89 teams scored.
Newark ends season for basketball team
The basketball team finished 17-6 overall, losing to host Newark 64-37 on Feb. 27 in the second round of the Division I district tournament.
Junior forward Matt Hennessey scored 11 points and senior guard Michael Lutter had 10 for the 17th-seeded Cardinals. Sophomore guard NiQuille Bell scored seven points and junior forward Sean Hennessey had six.
