The St. Charles Preparatory School basketball team is 6-4 overall and 2-2 in the CCL and had won five of six games after defeating Hartley 66-52 on Jan. 10.
Sean Hennessy led with 20 points and six 3-pointers against the Hawks, and Nick Pappa had 19 points with five 3s. Matt Hennessey scored 14 points and David Aslaner added nine.
The Cardinals begin the second round of their CCL schedule Friday, Jan. 17, at home against DeSales. On Dec. 9, St. Charles won the first meeting 45-40 as Sean Hennessey scored 19 points and Matt Hennessey added 11.
On Jan. 3, the Cardinals lost to Watterson 57-55 in overtime as Sean Hennessey had 23 points with five 3-pointers. Aslaner had nine points, all on 3s, and Matt Hennessey also scored nine points.
Hockey team earns state ranking
The hockey team was ranked second in the district behind Olentangy Orange and ninth in the state behind top-ranked Cleveland St. Ignatius in last week's polls.
The Cardinals are 19-3-1 overall and 9-2 in the Capital Hockey Conference to lead the White Division.
On Jan. 11, St. Charles defeated Upper Arlington 2-1 in overtime at OhioHealth Ice Haus in CHC play. Jack Cleary and Jacob Weikert both scored and goaltender Alex Ward had 18 saves.
Mitch Wade scored twice in a 7-0 league win over DeSales on Jan. 10 at Chiller Easton. Aaron Bowman, Jack Cleary, Ryan Cleary, Max Howson and Weikert had one goal apiece and Ward had 17 saves.
Wrestlers win 2 titles at Marion Harding
The wrestling team competed in the Marion Harding Invitational on Dec. 27 and 28 and finished 17th (73) of 33 teams behind champion Lakewood St. Edward (162).
Tim Rooney won the championship at 138 pounds and Cole Delaney was champion at 160.
The Cardinals had a Jan. 7 home meet with Dublin Scioto, London and Westland postponed because of bad weather. It was rescheduled for Jan. 28.
Bowling team starts new year with wins
The bowling team was 4-2 in the Central Ohio High School Bowling Conference-Central Division before facing Watterson on Jan. 13.
The Cardinals defeated Brookhaven 2,097-1,729 on Jan. 8 at Capri Lanes, as Noah Thomas was medalist with a 389 series that includ ed a high game of 208. Ryan Siesel rolled a 360, Daniel Munsell had a 331 and David Downey added a 328.
Downey was medalist with a 404 series (245 high game) in a 1,900-1,800 win over Whetstone on Jan. 9 at HP Lanes. Siesel added a 343.
Swimmers pick up wins at Sycamore
The swimming and diving team finished third (471) in the Larry Lyons Invitational on Jan. 4 behind co-champions Cincinnati St. Xavier and Centerville (473) and ahead of host Cincinnati Sycamore (341).
Franz Kabelka won the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute, 46.49 seconds) and Nick Ward was first in the 50 free (23.09). Tyler Welty won the 100 breaststroke (1:01.52).
The 200 medley relay of Max Penn, Welty, Austin Beam and Ward won in 1:41.84, and the 400 free relay of Franz Kabelka, Hannes Kabelka, Ward and Michael Ritchey was first in 3:23.6.
