Five Hartley High School seniors signed letters of intent Feb. 5 to play college football, including two who will play for Football Bowl Subdivision programs.
Alonzo Saxton, a defensive back, signed with Duke of the Atlantic Coast Conference, and Kalil Morris, a defensive lineman, signed with Kent State of the Mid-American Conference.
Signing with Division II programs were wide receiver and defensive back Jacob Mercier (Ohio Dominican), running back Sam Mackowiak (Ashland) and quarterback Jared Brandewie (Walsh).
Last season, Saxton, an eastside Columbus resident, was named state Defensive Player of the Year in Division V and Morris, a Groveport resident, had 57 tackles and nine sacks and was first-team all-state.
Mercier, a Blacklick resident, led Hartley with 729 yards receiving and seven touchdown receptions last fall and rushed for 392 yards and six scores, and Brandewie, an eastside resident, threw for 15 touchdowns and more than 1,300 yards as a senior and went 37-4 in three years as the starting quarterback.
Mackowiak, a Pataskala resident, was a two-year starter at running back, rushing for 2,042 yards and 29 touchdowns last fall. He also started at inside linebacker as a senior.
Last season, Hartley finished 13-2 and was Division V state runner-up.
