The St. Charles Preparatory School baseball team finished second in the CCL, but the Cardinals hope to come away with their first Division I district championship.
The Cardinals were 19-6 overall before playing 20th-seeded New Albany or 39th-seeded Worthington Kilbourne in the second round May 14. They were seeded seventh and had a first-round bye.
The winner advanced to play ninth-seeded Upper Arlington or 16th-seeded Watkins Memorial in a district semifinal Tuesday, May 20, at Gahanna. The Cardinals opened the regular season with a 7-3 loss to UA on April 1. They did not play the Warriors this season.
The district final is May 22 at Otterbein.
The Cardinals finished 6-2 in the CCL, behind Watterson at 7-1. They closed league play with three wins, defeating Ready 4-3 on May 5, DeSales 8-3 on May 6 and Hartley 6-2 on May 7.
St. Charles also defeated Bexley 12-2 in six innings May 8.
Through 25 games, the Cardinals had a team batting average of .342 and a team ERA of 2.15.
Matt Martin led the team with a batting average of .456 (26-for-57) and an on-base percentage of .569 to go with 20 runs and seven RBI. Jacob Weikert was batting .403 (31-for-77) with a .521 OBP, six doubles, 18 runs and 15 RBI. Trey Willard was hitting .397 (29-for-73) with two triples, eight runs and 15 RBI.
Charlie Kolp was batting .385 (30-for-78) with 20 runs and 19 RBI. Matt Cooke was hitting .362 (25-for-69) with three triples, 17 runs and 12 RBI.
Jacob Myers was 6-0 with a 1.99 ERA in 31 2/3 innings, and Nick Pappa was 4-2 with a 1.29 ERA in 43 1/3 innings with 19 strikeouts and 16 walks.
Willard was 6-2 with a 2.47 ERA in 34 innings with 16 strikeouts and 10 walks. Graham Plageman was 2-1 with one save and a 2.85 ERA in 19 1/3 innings and Tommy Ryan was 2-1 with a 2.95 ERA in 21 1/3 innings.
Track team looks to defend CCL title
The track and field team competes in the CCL meet Thursday, May 15, and Saturday, May 17, at DeSales.
Last spring, the Cardinals won the league meet with 175 points to finish ahead of DeSales (81), Ready (79), Hartley (77) and Watterson (74). It was their fourth CCL title in five years and eighth in 12 seasons.
The 3,200-meter relay of Nick Marino and 2013 graduates Connor Bowman, Will Herriman and Tom Krajnak won in 8 minutes, 11.7 seconds. Emmit Bryan (53.0) and Ben Carlisle (53.0) took the top two spots in the 400. Carlisle also was second in the long jump (19 feet, 5 1/2 inches) and David Heil was runner-up in the shot put (43-10).
The 800 relay of Bryan, Carlisle, Herriman and 2013 graduate Jonathan Radney was second (1:32.6) and the 1,600 relay of Bryan, Carlisle, Justin Law and Elliot Narcross was second (3:32.8). Najeem Babatunde, 2013 graduate Evan Brown, Bryan and Law ran on the third-place 400 relay (44.3).
The Cardinals compete next week in the Division I, district 2 meet at Hilliard Darby. The top four finishers in each event advance to the regional meet May 28 and 30 at Pickerington North.
The district field events are Tuesday, May 20, with the running preliminaries Wednesday, May 21, and the running finals May 24.
Tennis team to play in sectional
The tennis team was 12-2 overall before playing Pickerington North on May 13 and 3-0 in the CCL before playing DeSales on May 14.
With a win over DeSales, the Cardinals would have earned their third consecutive CCL title. The Stallions were 2-0 in league play before facing Watterson on May 12.
St. Charles competes Thursday, May 15, and Saturday, May 17, in a Division I sectional at Reynoldsburg. The top four finishers in singles and doubles advance to district May 23 and 24 at Hilliard Davidson.
Evan Yakubov is the second seed in singles behind Reynoldsburg's Cameron Raglin. Also competing in singles for the Cardinals will be David Kellogg and Connor Mentel.
In doubles, Sam Sullivan and Vinh Thai are seeded second behind Dublin Jerome's Asish Katta and Ryan Worthen. Will Niermeyer and Connor Yakubov are seeded third.
In the OTCA team tournament, the Cardinals defeated Westerville South 3-2 on May 6 before losing to UA 5-0 on May 7.
St. Charles defeated Reynoldsburg 5-0 on May 5 and Davidson 3-2 on May 8.
Volleyball team wins postseason opener
The volleyball team was 7-18 after defeating Olentangy 25-23, 25-18, 25-14 in the opening round of the Division II East Region tournament May 10.
The Cardinals played Kilbourne in a regional semifinal May 13. That winner advanced to a regional final Saturday, May 17, at Davidson against top-seeded Mount Vernon or Watterson.
The regional champion advances to the state tournament May 24 and 25 at Hamilton.
St. Charles had two players named all-region. Setter/opposite hitter Will Eichel was named to the first team and libero Kevin Summers was honorable mention.
Lacrosse team awaits Watterson
The lacrosse team was 9-6 before playing Bexley on May 13.
The Cardinals close the regular season Friday, May 16, at Watterson.
Nick Carter, Ryan Cleary, Brian Doney and Mitch Spaulding all scored twice and Alex Shuster had one goal as the Cardinals defeated Pickerington Central 9-8 on May 6.
St. Charles lost to Olentangy 10-6 on May 10.
