The Columbus School for Girls lacrosse team finished 5-11, losing at Columbus Academy 12-6 in the second round of the Division II South/Central Region tournament May 15.

The Unicorns opened by winning three of six games, but lost seven of their last eight regular-season contests. They defeated Big Walnut 18-10 in the first round of the postseason May 12 before losing to Academy.

CSG tied Hartley for fourth (3-4) in the Central Independent League behind Academy (6-1), Bexley (6-1) and DeSales (6-1) and ahead of Granville (2-5), Watterson (2-5) and Wellington (0-7).

"Overall, we played competitively as a team and worked hard until the end of each game," coach Brittney Zerhusen said.

CSG loses three senior starters in Erin Balasky and Sophie Sugar and Caroline Pompili.

Sugar, who had 204 career goals, was first-team all-region and all-league and second-team all-state. Balasky was honorable mention all-region and first-team all-league.

Nine starters are expected to return in junior Sam Ziegler, sophomores Molly Bokor, Olivia Feldman, Katie Henderson, Avery Hinson, Mo Ostrowski, Adelaide Standley and Kaitlyn Yale and freshman Lexie Armstrong.

Hinson and Ostrowski were second-team all-league.

Sophomore Charlotte Lennox is expected to attend another school next year. She was honorable mention all-league.

"We were a younger team with the majority of our team being in the sophomore class," Zerhusen said. "With the sophomores stepping up next year as juniors, I have a positive outlook and am excited to see what we are capable of."

Sims, relay advance to regional track meet

The track and field team competed in the Division III district meet May 20, 21 and 24 at Whitehall.

Advancing to regional from the first two days of action were Erika Sims, who placed second in the long jump (16 feet, 10 1/2 inches), and Emma Harris, Grace Tierney, Anna Tierney and Eleanor Smith, who finished third in the 3,200-meter relay (9 minutes, 46.8 seconds).

District running finals were held May 24. The top four finishers in each district event advanced to the regional May 28 and Friday, May 30, at Fairfield Union.

At regional, the top four finishers in each event advance to the state meet June 6 and 7 at Ohio State.
