The seventh-seeded Cardinals, who finished 22-7, were playing in their first district final since 2003. They won their last district title in 2000, which came in Division II.

St. Charles trailed 3-1 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, but scored twice on an error to force extra innings.

"There's just no quit in these kids," coach Ray Benjamin said. "They have done this all year."

In the fifth, Charlie Kolp singled home Jacob Weikert with the Cardinals' first run.

Nick Pappa took the loss for St. Charles despite strong pitching for 8 2/3 innings. With two outs and the bases empty in the ninth, he gave up a walk and two consecutive hits, leading to a pair of Gahanna runs. He had two strikeouts and four walks and gave up 10 hits, five coming in the final three innings.

Weikert doubled, singled and drove in a run, and Pappa had two singles.

St. Charles reached the district final by defeating ninth-seeded Upper Arlington 10-6 on May 20 at Gahanna.

Kolp went 4-for-4 with a double, three singles, three RBI and two runs. Andrew Fenlon doubled and drove in two, and Jacob Moehrman doubled and scored. Weikert singled twice, scored twice and had an RBI, and winning pitcher Trey Willard singled and drove in two.

Heil advances toregional in track

David Heil of the track and field team advanced to the Division I regional meet that began May 28 and concludes Friday, May 30, at Pickerington North.

The senior threw the discus 138 feet, 2 inches to place fourth in the district 2 meet May 20 at Hilliard Darby. The top four finishers in each district event advanced to regional, where the top four in each event advance to the state meet June 6 and 7 at Ohio State.

The district 2 running preliminaries were May 21 and the finals were May 24.

Lacrosse team winspostseason opener

The eighth-seeded lacrosse team was 12-6 overall after defeating 13th-seeded Hilliard Davidson 11-4 on May 22 in a play-in game of the Division I Central Region tournament.

Ryan Cleary had two goals and two assists, and Nick Carter and Mitch Spaulding both had two goals and one assist. John Browne scored twice and Matthew Drought, Eddie Glace and Alex Shuster all scored once. Jack Cleary had 11 saves and Nic Carducci added nine.

The Cardinals advanced to play fifth-seeded Olentangy Liberty on May 24 in the first round, with the winner playing in a regional semifinal May 28, likely against top-seeded Upper Arlington.

The regional final is Saturday, May 31, and the state semifinal is Wednesday, June 4.

Tennis playerscompete at district

The tennis team had one singles player and two doubles teams compete in the Division I district tournament May 23 and 24 at Davidson.

The top four finishers in singles and doubles advanced to state Friday, May 30, and Saturday, May 31, at Ohio State.

Freshman Evan Yakubov competed in singles at district. Playing doubles were the teams of Sam Sullivan and Vinh Thai and Will Niermeyer and Connor Yakubov.
