Columbus School for Girls tennis coach Sean Delaney quickly developed lofty goals for her team after being hired in the spring.

"I've always been impressed with the reputation of CSG, and after meeting the players, my goal is to develop into one of the most competitive Division II programs around Columbus," Delaney said. "Eventually, I'd like to build on that to become one of the most competitive programs in the state."

The Unicorns, who finished 7-5 overall last year, opened Aug. 11 against New Albany.

CSG, which finished second in the CCL (3-1) behind Watterson (4-0) a year ago, opens league play Sept. 4 at Ready.

Four state qualifiers have returned in seniors Mary Anne Click, Paige Quinton and Linda Yang and sophomore Marissa Madison.

In last year's Division II state tournament, Click and Yang went 1-1 in doubles and Madison and Quinton went 0-1 in doubles. Click and Yang won a district title and finished second at sectional, while Madison and Quinton won a sectional title and finished second at district.

Senior Alexandra Vervella and sophomore Ally Kennedy also have returned. Senior Gabby Kennedy is expected to miss the season after tearing an ACL, but will serve as a team manager.

"We had 20 girls come out for the team and I'm impressed with our team's depth and skill level," Delaney said. "I'm confident that we'll have more state qualifiers and I'd like to have a winning season. Watterson is one of the top teams, but I'm confident we can at least finish second behind them in the CCL if we play well."

Golf team aimingfor state appearance

The golf team's top six players have returned in seniors Saba Mehra and Erika Sims, junior Caroline Korterud and sophomores Karrington Hanks, Camryn Pickworth and Megan Wong.

Wong shot a 172 to tie for 24th in the Division II state tournament at Ohio State's Gray Course last year.

Coach Matt Coker said freshmen Alexia Sanders and Grayson Sokol also should bolster his lineup.

The Unicorns opened Aug. 6 by finishing fifth (400) of 12 teams in the first MOGGL tournament at Phoenix, behind champion Watterson (322).

"This year's team is returning six varsity players that made the district tournament last year and is adding some young talent from an incoming class of four freshmen," Coker said. "Though this team is young and continuing to learn the game of golf, they possess the confidence and ability to have a successful season.

"This team has a high confidence in one another and cherishes playing for one another. They are truly a team. We have a lot of experience on this team and I'm looking forward to the opportunity of coaching a very successful team and group of young ladies."

The Unicorns have set the goal of improving on last year's postseason performance when they placed second (420) in the six-team sectional at Blacklick Woods behind Licking Valley (373) before finishing ninth (400) in the 13-team district tournament at Blacklick Woods behind state-qualifiers Dover (352), Licking Valley (375) and Sugarcreek Garaway (377).

"My goal this season is to continue developing all 11 girls' games in preparation for sectional and district," Coker said. "After making district last season, we would really like to make a push at qualifying for state. Last season, Megan Wong qualified for state individually and placed in the top 25. This season, we would like to make it as a team."
