Field hockey in the Columbus area has blossomed into the best by far in our state. Thomas Worthington, Columbus Academy and Watterson have won state championships recently. Dublin Jerome, Olentangy Liberty, Bexley, Upper Arlington and Columbus School for Girls are potent programs as well. Once you understand the game, field hockey is a fun and exciting event to watch, and you simply can't miss being entertained if you find a match between any of the above mentioned teams. ... See Hartley and Watterson play each other in volleyball. Two fiercely competitive programs have their first meeting Sept. 9 at Watterson.

Find time to watch Alex Yadegari of Wellington or Eric Stevenson of Worthington Christian play boys soccer. Both are at the top of their game. ... There are many, many cross country invitationals that you can attend, but many of the top central Ohio runners will compete in the Central District Invitational on Sept. 13 at Three Creeks Metro Park. It will preview the crucial end-of-the-year meets leading to the state meet.

If you love seeing great linebacker play in football you have a great chance to see three of Ohio's best in Zach Boren of Pickerington Central, Storm Klein of Licking Valley and Will Studlien of Big Walnut. ... There is a wealth of outstanding girls golfers in the Columbus area you could follow on a round. Emily Ransone of Watterson, Alex Brown of Upper Arlington, Courtney Yamamoto of Pickerington North, Paige Kelley of Heath, Kristen Helmsdoerfer of Olentangy and Julie Lechner of Liberty are just a few of the best.

Girls soccer is another sport that has great credentials in this part of the state and Pickerington North, Hilliard Davidson and Westerville North are three of the early season picks to be terrific. ... Water polo has a minimum of teams competing, but there is a maximum of quality. Seeing the Ohio Cup at Thomas Worthington the next two weekends would make for exciting viewing.

Make time to watch some outstanding girls tennis players display their talent on the court. Niki Flower of Upper Arlington, Maddie Kobelt of New Albany, Liberty's Alex Power and Kim My Li of DeSales are in the elite status, and it is rewarding to see Christiana Raymond of Columbus Academy back on the court. Two years ago Christiana won the Division II state singles title for Worthington Christian, but missed all of last year with a back injury.

Golf is always big in this area of the country, and you can't miss seeing the best of high school golf if you travel around a course and watch the boys teams at either Dublin Jerome or Upper Arlington. A few of the best boys golfers include Brad Lucas of Thomas Worthington, Aaron Siekmann of Dublin Jerome and Matt and T.T. Crouch of Mount Vernon.

Some of the top volleyball players to see this year include Giana D'Andrea of Hartley, Ashley Andrews of Marion Pleasant, Kacie Kunke of Pickerington North and Lauren Bell of Dublin Coffman. ... Boys soccer will have its usual contingent of talented teams in central Ohio. Worthington Christian, DeSales, Davidson and Worthington Kilbourne look good, with Davidson coming off a Division I state championship.

The big change in football scheduling this year comes in the OCC where realignment has set up some terrific rivalries. The Pickerington schools play each other, and so do schools in Westerville, Worthington and Olentangy. ... There are plenty of talented girls soccer players to watch on the field like Hilary Ells of Grandview, Ashton Campbell of Westerville North, Morgan Herbert of Dublin Jerome and Brittany Cheese of Davidson.

I mention this every season, but your support and attendance will be appreciated deeply if you go to a junior varsity, freshman or middle school sports event.

Find a day to see the top cross country runners in our area like Luis Carbajal of Dublin Scioto, Ahmad Jilo of West, Katie Rutherford of Upper Arlington, Krista Mathews of Liberty Union, Kelsey McAlpine of Thomas Worthington, Rebekah Reese of Centennial and Isaac Potts of Fredericktown, but promise me if you are at a cross country meet that you stay and cheer in every runner who is trying so hard to reach their personal goals.

There you have it, a very small list of great things to see in the next few months. Enjoy the efforts of these young people as the proudly wear the uniform of their school.
