Canal Pointe, Thrush and Eichorn drives, South High Street and roads in four subdivisions are on the list for improvements this spring and summer, according to Canal Winchester's 2009 capital improvement plan for streets.

Construction services administrator Bill Sims said the work will start in March or April.

Sims released the 2009 street capital improvements plan schedule at the village council service committee meeting Jan. 19.

Improvements to Thrush Drive are expected to start in the beginning of March.

He said plans include replacing the asphalt pavement on Thrush Drive from Fox Hill Drive north to Groveport Road. Crews will complete the remaining 300 feet of bike path on the east side of Thrush Drive to connect with Groveport Road, as well.

Sims said the estimated cost of the Thrush Drive improvements is approximately $503,000.

The Ohio Public Works Commission approved a grant of up to $909,000 last year to be used for Thrush Drive improvements this year, said village public works director Matt Peoples.

Sims said street maintenance is planned for three village subdivisions -- Winchester Village, Villages at Westchester and Winchester Trace -- as part of the annual street program. The program also will include milling and overlaying asphalt pavement on South High Street, he added.

The cost was estimated at about $725,000 when the plan was 70-percent completed, Sims said.

"We always reserve the right to expand (the street program)," he added. "If the bids are really good and there's enough money, we'll probably crack fill and slurry seal Washington Street."

Slurry sealing is an asphalt pavement material applied to a street to extend its life, Sims said.

According to the schedule, work on this portion of the street program is expected to start in the beginning of April.

Widening Eichorn Drive and making improvements to Canal Pointe are expected to begin in the middle of April.

"We'll be widening Eichorn Drive 12 feet to allow for the addition of a third lane," Sims said.

Construction is under way on an emergency medical center north of Eichorn Drive.

Dove Parkway will be extended as part of improvements to Canal Pointe, Sims said.

Village officials have contracted the engineering firm Bird and Bull for estimates on the Eichorn Drive and Canal Pointe improvements.

"Our goal is under $2-million," Sims said. "At this point, honestly, we're waiting for a good number. It was projected last fall that prices (for asphalt) this spring would be abhorrently high."
