Construction will begin this week on Ashbrook Run, a 176-unit apartment complex just outside of Canal Winchester.

The one- and two-bedroom apartment community, built by Columbus-based Metro Development, is on 9 acres off Winchester Pike just west of Gender Road in the city of Columbus. The buildings should be available for lease by late summer.

Ashbrook Run is contiguous to the Glen at Schirm Farms, a 30-unit, single-family residential development built by Village Communities. Each company is owned Donald R. Kelley & Co. Realtors.

Trey Giller, president and CEO of Donald R. Kenney & Co. Realtors, said that while the condominium and single-family development arm of the company has been hit hard, apartment construction is on the uptick. The Kenney company, through its various subsidiaries, has built 40,000 units in Greater Columbus.

Metro Development has 788 units recently built or under construction. One of the largest is the 344-unit Winchester Park, at Winchester Pike and Hamilton Road.

Placement of multifamily properties has been on the minds of Canal Winchester Village Council members, who are trying to control the location of future multifamily construction in the village. Council members have scheduled a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. April 6 in the town hall to discuss a bifurcation of multifamily zoning code, differentiating condominiums from apartments.
