Sotlar looking forward to a new school year

Superintendent Jim Sotlar, who came to the Canal Winchester school district in January, said he is looking forward to his first full year at the helm.

"This is a great district and community, and I am proud to be part of it. The start of the new school year is an exciting time for students, staff and parents and I am looking forward to an outstanding year," Sotlar said.

Most Canal Winchester students will return to the classroom on Wednesday, Aug. 21.

Before opening day, several schools have set aside times for students to drop off supplies, find classrooms and meet their teachers.

Indian Trail Elementary School, which serves grades K-2, and Winchester Trail Elementary School, which serves grades 3-5 and preschool, will open their doors from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, for supply drop-off and classroom visits.

Welcome-back meetings will be held in the cafeteria for kindergarten students from 3:30 to 3:45 p.m.; for first-grade students from 4 to 4:15 p.m.; and for second-graders from 4:30 to 4:45 p.m.

The first day of class for grades 1-2 will be Aug. 21. The day will start at 8:55 a.m. and end at 3:40 p.m.

Students in grades 3-5 will arrive at 9 a.m. and leave at 3:45 p.m. each day. Their first day of school this year is also Aug. 21.

Although kindergarten students will not start school until Wednesday, Aug. 28, the district will conduct kindergarten testing on Aug. 21-23, and Aug. 26 and 27. Parents will be notified by mail of their children's appointment times for the one-hour testing.

Students in morning kindergarten will attend class from 8:55 to 11:40 a.m. The afternoon session runs from 12:55 to 3:40 p.m.

The first day for preschool will be Aug. 21. The morning session runs from 9 to 11:45 a.m. and the afternoon session runs from 1 to 3:45 p.m. Preschool is in session from Monday through Thursday according to the district website.

Middle school students attending sixth grade will be able to participate in an orientation and receive their schedules at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19. Seventh- and eighth-grade students will pick up their schedules from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20.

The regular school day for grades 6-8 runs from 7:45 a.m. to 2:40 p.m.

Freshman orientation for Canal Winchester High School students is scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14. Freshmen will be able to pick up their schedules and have senior students answer questions. Students are asked to arrive between 6 and 6:30 p.m.; parents are asked to attend a 6:30 p.m. meeting at the Education Center.

High school seniors will be able to pick up their schedules at the high school from 8 to 10 a.m. Aug. 14. Junior and sophomore student schedules will be distributed between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Aug. 14.

High school classes will resume for the year Aug. 21. The school day starts at 7:30 a.m. and the day ends at 2:20 p.m.
