Credit union seeks book donations

First Service Federal Credit Union, located in Groveport, is attempting to collect 1,000 books during its Reach Out & Read Book Drive for Nationwide Children's Hospital.

First Service will accept donations of new or gently used books for infants and young children up to a fifth-grade reading level. Donations will be accepted through March 10 at any First Service office during normal lobby hours.

Bender scholarships to be awarded

The Canal Winchester City Council recently announced that two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded in honor of John Bender, a former council member, educator and coach who died.

Graduating seniors are encouraged to review eligibility requirements and submit applications either online or in the guidance offices at Canal Winchester High School, 300 Washington St., and Bloom-Carroll High School, 5240 Plum Road, Carroll.

The deadline for applications and completed materials is April 1. Scholarship winners will be recognized at the city council meeting April 17.

Lang named state's top superintendent

Former Canal Winchester Schools Superintendent Susan Lang recently was named as Ohio's Superintendent of the Year by the Buckeye Association of School Administration.

The nominees are evaluated based on the candidate's leadership for learning, communication, professionalism and community involvement, in addition to the candidate's body of work. Lang operated as superintendent of Canal Winchester Schools from 2000 to 2004 and now serves the same position for Wyoming City Schools.
