The Canal Winchester High School girls basketball team entered its game against Gran-ville on Jan. 8 having already matched its win total from each of the last two seasons.
The Indians were 5-6 overall before facing Granville. They finished 5-16 in both the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons.
Canal Winchester defeated Hamilton Township 86-62 on Jan. 3 as Kaleigh Whitlatch (17 points), Raven Hamilton (15), Sarah Miles (14), Jade Smith (11) and Jasmine Smith (10) each scored in double digits.
The Indians fell to 4-3 in the MSL-Buckeye with a 70-46 loss to Fairfield Union on Jan. 5.
On Dec. 28, Canal Winchester beat Centennial 54-46 behind 16 points from Whitlatch. The Stars were 7-3 entering the game.
Canal Winchester travels to Logan Elm on Tuesday, Jan. 15, for a league game. The Indians lost the first matchup this season, 62-56 on Dec. 7. The Braves were led offensively by Nikki Young (22) and Taylor Saxton (18).
Miles led the Indians with 22 points and Whitlatch scored 11.
Boys basketball team showing improvement
After opening its season with four consecutive losses, the boys basketball team won three of its next six games.
The Indians lost to Hartley 59-50 on Jan. 5 to drop to 3-7 overall, but they beat Teays Valley 49-43 on Jan. 4 to improve to 3-2 in the MSL-Buckeye Division before playing Jan. 8 at Hamilton Township.
Thomas Nolan and Skyler Scott each had 12 points and Alex McCoy scored 11 against Teays Valley.
The Indians' other league victories came against Amanda-Clearcreek (55-39 on Dec. 18) and Circleville (52-40 on Dec. 22). Nolan had 18 points and Seth McCoy scored 15 against Amanda-Clearcreek and Nolan had 11 points and Seth McCoy and Jalyn Smith each scored 10 against Circleville.
The Indians play host to Fairfield Union in an MSL-Buckeye contest Saturday, Jan. 12. The Falcons dropped to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in the league with a 52-51 loss to Hamilton Township on Jan. 5.
