Gary Burke has stepped down as coach of the Canal Winchester High School girls basketball team.
Burke led the Indians to a 27-61 overall record in four seasons, including a 7-16 mark and a sixth-place finish (5-9) in the OCC-Cardinal Division behind champion Westerville North (13-1) last season.
“I love the kids and I’ve enjoyed my time at Canal Winchester, and I was really excited about next season because we’ve laid the groundwork for the success of our five-year plan to start showing next year,” he said. “But it got to the point where my health won’t allow me to continue coaching the way I need to coach, and the kids deserve to have someone who has the energy to give them a 100 percent effort.
“I have type 2 diabetes and some problems with my liver, and it’s been tough regulating my blood sugar while I’m coaching. I’ve struggled with this decision over the past year, but I couldn’t coach with the same enthusiasm or up to my standards, so I’ve decided to retire from coaching high school basketball.”
