A group of Clintonville businesses is inviting residents to shop locally while enjoying some holiday cheer.

Fifteen businesses are participating in Shop Clintonville's sixth annual open house Dec. 6.

Many businesses will offer special deals on their merchandise, and there will be live entertainment, an outdoor farmers market, kitten adoption and massage demonstrations.

"Merchants will just sort of open their doors and have refreshments or sales," said organizer Melissa Goodrich, owner of the Colonial Candy Shoppe. "Everyone's doing something a little bit different."

This year, the open house will include two new Clintonville businesses -- Sew to Speak, a sewing and fabric store, and Red Rover, a children's clothing consignment shop.

The open house is meant to encourage Clintonville residents to look to local businesses when shopping for holiday gifts, Goodrich said.

"It gives the neighbors just an added reason to look around and see what's in their own backyard," she said.

In addition to supporting local businesses, those shopping in Clintonville will find a variety of unusual and handmade gifts, Goodrich said.

"We've got items you're not going to find in the large retail stores," she said.

Also on Dec. 6, customers patronizing Shop Clintonville businesses will be able to use their Season of Giving discount cards.

The cards, available with a $20 minimum donation to the Clintonville-Beechwold Community Resources Center at KEMBA Financial Credit Union, are redeemable from Dec. 3 through 6 and give users a 10-percent discount at the 15 participating businesses.

In past years, Goodrich said, businesses participating in the holiday open house have donated a portion of their sales to the renovation fund for the Whetstone Recreation Center. With that project wrapped up, Goodrich said businesses decided to switch their focus to the CRC.

The cards will be available at KEMBA, 4311 N. High St., through Dec. 6.
