Three more nonprofits have become members of Clintonville-based Community Shares of Mid Ohio. The additions bring to 60 the number of local nonprofits serving the central Ohio area under the Community Shares umbrella and participating in workplace fundraising efforts.

Member agencies are community-based, volunteer-led charities preventing family, school and neighborhood violence, homelessness, child abuse, hunger and environmental pollution; protecting human and civil rights; and increasing health, education, safety and social justice.

"We are thrilled to support even more local nonprofits in central Ohio and to offer donors additional charity choices through paycheck contributions," Melissa Magers, executive director of Community Shares of Mid Ohio, said in a statement. "With the addition of these three members we have the opportunity to serve more people and neighborhoods, which allows us to help bridge the gap in community needs."

The new members are:

Asha Ray of Hope, which supports and counsels individuals and families affected by domestic violence in Ohio, especially in the South Asian community.

The Film Council of Greater Columbus, which, through the Columbus International Film and Video Festival, "empowers filmmakers and audiences alike through awarding excellence and presenting films of vision," according to the announcement.

The Fountain of Hope, which "offers a safe harbor from the hunger, poverty, crime and drugs prevalent in the community, a place to spend time after school with loving, dedicated volunteers."

"Employees can now direct their donations through Community Shares to over 60 member organizations who reflect the diversity and ever changing needs of our community," board president Jeff Whiting said.

Membership is based on an agency's work for progressive social change, diversity of issues and the importance of those issues to the community. Members join Community Shares by filling out applications throughout the year with a final deadline in the fall.
