Thinking outside the box, two local artists are organizing an event that will put designers, caterers, a candle-maker, craftsmen, entrepreneurs and others inside box trucks.
"In the Box: Mobile Experiences" is scheduled to take place from noon to 6 p.m. April 28 in the parking lot of the Columbus Museum of Art, 480 E. Broad St.
The brainchild of Clintonville resident Beth Dekker and Adam Brouillette of the Grandview Heights area, the event is free and open to the public -- and open to a broad range of concepts, Dekker said last week.
"All in all, we were looking for creative, exciting experiences that can fit in the back of a box truck," she said.
Brouillette, who was manager of the recently closed Junctionview Studios, and Dekker, part of the team involved in Wild Goose Creative, got the idea for In the Box at last summer's Columbus Arts Festival.
The two were unloading artwork from a box truck and got to joking that next summer, they'd make things easier by just trying to sell items right out of the back of the vehicle.
"We kind of looked at each other and said, 'Hmm, wouldn't that be a great event?' " Dekker recalled.
They've since discovered, she added, that similar events have taken place in Indianapolis and other venues, but this will be, according to a press release, "Columbus' foray into a unique way to interact with art in all of its exciting forms."
In the Box is a one-day event that allows designers, artists and entrepreneurs to create encounters within the confines of a box truck.
The only restriction is that participants' ideas must fit into a truck.
Derrick Hickman will be creating a carnival barker-themed box with his "Modern Freak" banners displayed.
Two Caterers will create an educational display showing the waste created by food businesses.
Camielle Howard of Cam's Crochet will be building a warm and friendly home atmosphere with hand-crocheted items on display.
Monday Night Live will perform a sketch comedy showcase inside their box truck."
"We partnered with the Columbus Museum of Art because we obviously needed a parking lot to set up in," Dekker said.
Admission to the museum is free on Sundays, so In the Box organizers are hoping for a large crowd.
Attendees will be encouraged to interact with each box truck on their own throughout the open house event, and items/experiences will be available for purchase at some of the trucks, according to the announcement.
"Obviously, this is not just artists," Dekker said last week. "These are experiences.
"There's definitely more of a hands-on feel," she said.
"You're with the creator, you're with the crafter, you're with the artist.
"We always love getting audiences and artists together and starting collaborations and conversations."
A variety of food trucks, including Sweet Carrot (casual dining), Ajumama (Korean), Tatoheads (natural and sweet potato fries with dipping sauces) and Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, will also be on-site during In the Box: Mobile Experiences.
"As with all of our events, we would love for it to be an annual thing or a biannual thing, but we take things one event at a time," Dekker said.
"We've already gotten a great response and people have gotten excited about it."
