CRC helps get senior citizens to farmers market

Officials with the Clintonville Farmers Market and the Clintonville-Beechwold Community Resources Center last week announced formation of a partnership dubbed the Senior Supportive Services Farmers Market Program.

The initiative will allow those involved in the center's seniors programs to benefit from locally grown food with market coupons and transportation to the Saturday markets in Clintonville.

Qualified senior applicants will receive up to $50 in coupons that can be used for Ohio fruits and vegetables, meat, honey, artisan breads and more. CRC vans will transport seniors to the market July 13 and 20, Aug. 10 and 17, and Sept. 14 and 21.

Market manager Laura Zimmerman said the market will provide "senior ambassadors" who will show seniors through the market, and the CRC will imprint donated cloth shopping bags with CRC and farmers market logos.

Zimmerman said she and fellow market manager Michelle White will kick off the program with a presentation at the Seniors Breakfast Club at 11 a.m. next Thursday, July 11, at North Broadway United Methodist Church, 48 E. North Broadway.

The 43214 ZIP code has the highest percentage of seniors in Franklin County, according to a CRC press release, and the center's research shows Clintonville seniors have a strong desire to be a part of the Saturday-morning farmers markets -- and that many need financial assistance to do so.

Seniors interested in the program may call the center at 614-267-3050 to request an application. Applications will be accepted through November.

Qualification for the coupons will be based on income and coupon availability.

CRC open house set

The resources center will open its doors for a community open house from 4 to 7 p.m. next Thursday, July 11.

The event will allow CRC staff and board members to show off the agency's new facility at 3222 N. High St. as well as improvements to its long-term home at 14 W. Lakeview Ave.

Food, tours and more are planned for the event.

Food trucks help center

The CRC will benefit from a new event at Clinton Heights Lutheran Church.

The church, 15 Clinton Heights Ave., has designated July as Food Truck Month, and is working with Jim Ellison from Street Eats Columbus to attract local food trucks to its parking lot from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday in July.

The schedule includes:

* July 6 -- The Explorers Club.

* July 13 -- Pitabilities.

* July 20 -- OH! Burger.

* July 27 -- The Explorers Club.

All tips offered at the trucks will be donated to the CRC's outreach programs.

Tables and chairs will be set up in the parking lot, and the building will be open so patrons may use the restrooms and escape potential heat and humidity.

For more information, call the church at 614-267-4991.
