Residents asked to donate pet food

CRC regularly helps families with pets, but food often runs short, organizers say

Organizers of a pet-food drive hope to stock the shelves of the Clintonville-Beechwold Community Resources Center.

The drive will continue through June 30. Food for dogs, cats and other pets may be dropped off at various locations throughout the community.

Donna Barr Gehlmann, co-founder of the nonprofit Spay Neuter Assistance Program of Central Ohio, is the primary organizer of the drive, said Antoinette Errante, who got to know Gehlmann through some local pet forums and agreed to help.

"She really spearheaded this," Errante said.

It came to Gehlmann's attention that CRC personnel "do a lot to help families in the community, and part of that is also helping family pets," Errante added.

"People often go without themselves to feed their pets," she said. "They're always short of donations of pet food. A lot of people don't realize that's needed.

"This is also a reason why people end up surrendering their dogs to shelters."

Drop-off locations for donations of pet food include:

* Lucky's Market, 2770 N. High St.

* Starbucks, 3416 N. High St.

* ShamPoodles All Breed Dog Grooming, 4139 N. High St.

* Clintonville-Beechwold Community Resources Center, 14 W. Lakeview Ave.

* Weiland's Market, 3600 Indianola Ave.

* Park Your Paws Doggie Day Care, 4366 Indianola Ave.

* Beechwold Veterinary Hospital, 4590 Indianola Ave.

"We have wonderful local businesses partnering up with us where people can drop off pet food and we'll pick them up at a regular basis," Errante said. "Any kind of pet food: dogs, cats, sometimes people have leftover food for other kinds of critters. Whatever food people are willing to donate, I'm sure someone can use it."

SNAP of Central Ohio and Mama Laurie's Pet Sitting also are sponsors of the pet food drive.
