Goodguys car show cruises into town July 11-13

Nearly 7,000 vintage muscle cars, hot rods and stock cars will roll into central Ohio for the Goodguys 17th PPG Hot Rod and Custom Car Nationals from July 11-13 at the Ohio Expo Center, 717 E. 17th Ave.

The Columbus stop is the 12th of 19 national shows the Goodguys Rod and Custom Association hosts each year.

Among those bringing a car to this year's show will be Hilliard resident Rod Friedman.

Friedman, 75, owns a 1966 Plymouth Belvedere that he restored to its original condition.

Friedman said he bought the car in 2000 and did some of the restoration himself but had professionals restore other parts of it.

The two-door hardtop with a white body and red interior is the only classic he currently owns, but he and his son are working to restore a Model T Ford.

"I always liked classic American cars, but then I started driving imports ... but then I came across (the Plymouth) and wanted to have it," Friedman said. "It's been fun to drive."

Friedman drives the car each Sunday to a local golf course and often drives in to the Gallery Hop in the Short North.

Friedman also takes the car to five or six shows a year, he said, and the Goodguys show will be his fifth.

"I go early and get a good parking spot then just walk around and look at all the other cars," Friedman said.

In addition to showcasing thousands of hot rods, the Goodguys show will feature vendor exhibits, a used auto parts swap, seminars, a model car show and live entertainment.

"If you love cars, this is the place to be," said Betsy Bennett, a Goodguys spokeswoman.

The show will include an appearance by Kenny Youngblood, a recent inductee of the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame.

Youngblood also is an artist and the creator of the iconic "Eliminator Coupe" that was featured in several videos and the album cover of Eliminator by ZZ Top.

The show will open each day at 8 a.m. at the Ohio Expo Center, closing at 5 p.m. July 11 and 12 and 3 p.m. July 13.

In addition, some activities will take place at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, where drag-racing competitions are held.

Gates at the raceway open at 2 p.m. July 11. Time trials commence at 4 p.m., followed at 7 p.m. by eliminations in a variety of classes.

Tickets for National Trail Raceway are sold separately at the raceway for $20. Tickets for children ages 7 to 12 will be $6.

General admission at the Expo Center will cost the same amount. Children under age 6 will be admitted free. Parking at the Expo Center will be $6.
