Dominion Middle School will stage Stephen Sondheim's musical retelling of Grimm Brothers fairy tales -- minus a bit of the "grim."

Into the Woods Jr., an adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical by Sondheim and James Lapine that removes some of the adult elements of the original, will be performed at 7 p.m. today through Saturday, March 10-12, in the auditorium at the school, 330 E. Dominion Blvd.

Tickets for the production, which drama teacher Emily Whitaker said has a cast of around 50 youngsters, cost $5 for adults, $3 for students.

"It's a musical that we've wanted to do for a while here at Dominion," Whitaker sad. "We wanted to do something that was complex. It's very musically challenging, and we felt we had the troupe that had the chops to handle it this year."

Into the Woods Jr. features favorite fairy-tale characters Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (of beanstalk fame) and the Witch. The story centers around a baker and his wife, who must gather items to break a curse that has left them unable to conceive.

"There are a lot of great parts in this show," Whitaker said.

One of those is the Witch, played by Dahlia Kleen.

"My character is not really the villain of the story, but she kind of sets up why the baker and his wife go into the woods," she said. "I kind of set up the plot."

This will be Dahlia's fifth production at Dominion.

"I think I'm kind of used to it now," she said. "It's all-around fun for all of us."

Henry Gorsuch has the key role of the baker.

"The character the baker is trying to go into the woods to have a child, but can't," Henry said. "Little does he know there's a curse on him and his house. He has to collect certain items to lift the spell."

This is the second play for Henry at the middle school, and he's got memorizing his lines down to an art.

"I sit on my couch with my cat and I repeat the lines over and over and over again until I have them down," he said.
