The Whetstone High School wrestling team will compete in the 14-team All North Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 2, at Dublin Jerome before completing the regular season with a dual match against host Reynoldsburg on Feb. 7.
The Braves lost to host Westerville North 72-6 in the first round of the inaugural Division I state team tournament Jan. 23.
They were seeded seventh of eight teams in Region 5-B of the dual-format tournament and North was the second seed.
"We (didn't win a match) against North and that is the first time that has happened since I've been coach that I can remember," sixth-year coach Tom Jones said. "It shows us the level we need to reach for us to be successful.
"The reason we participated was to see that level of competition. Some people say that it's pointless for City League teams to try to compete, but my philosophy is you don't get better unless you see better competition."
Whetstone will compete for the Golden Grappler Trophy on Thursday, Jan. 31, at Centennial.
The Braves have five wrestlers with 15 or more wins in Daylon Smothers (16-1 at 132 pounds), Cameron Au (19-4 at 160), Tony Lehnen (16-4 at 106), Christian Bobo (16-5 at 152) and Kevin Ellison (15-6 at 220).
Boys basketball team seeking more points
The boys basketball team lost to Brookhaven 78-49 on Jan. 25, marking its sixth loss in a row and the fourth consecutive game in which it scored fewer than 50 points.
The Braves were averaging 52.9 points through 15 games but averaged just 40.8 points in their losses to Columbus East (64-31 on Jan. 15), Northland (87-36 on Jan. 18), Groveport (64-47 on Jan. 22) and Brookhaven.
Against Brookhaven, guard Gary Hoover had a team-high 15 points, followed by guard Claude Bogan with 14 and guard Aaron Adair with 11. Adair had 12 points and Hoover scored 11 against Groveport.
