The Watterson High School baseball team lost to Jonathan Alder 4-3 in a Division II district final May 23 at Beavers Field in Lancaster.
The fourth-seeded Pioneers improved to 21-8 and advanced to play Goshen, New Richmond, Springfield Kenton Ridge or Springfield Shawnee in a regional semifinal May 30 at the University of Dayton.
The sixth-seeded Eagles finished 19-11.
“I’m proud of our guys for making it this far, but the frustrating part of it is we had every opportunity to score runs and win this game and we didn’t get it done,” coach Scott Manahan said.
The Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Sam Severance drove in Andrew Ohl with a sacrifice fly, and they extended their lead to 2-0 in the second as Avery Janning scored on an RBI single by Gabe Martin.
Jonathan Alder answered with four runs in the bottom of the second, scoring the eventual winning score on an error.
In the sixth, Martin singled to score Kevin Davis, who was pinch-running for Greg Jacknewitz after Jacknewitz reached base on a walk, to make it 4-3, but Watterson squandered scoring opportunities in two other innings.
The Eagles failed to score in the fifth after loading the bases with one out and had a runner on third with one out in the seventh but left him stranded.
“We hit the ball hard all day, but we hit it right at people,” Manahan said.
