PLAIN CITY — For all but two games of the second set in the Division I doubles final, Olentangy Orange High School senior Anna Sanford and freshman Alle Sanford proved to be unstoppable at this year’s two-day state tournament.
The Sanford sisters won each of their first three matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores and then beat Cincinnati Sycamore sophomores Alexa Abele and Maggie Skwara 6-0, 6-2 to capture the championship Oct. 19 at Elysium Tennis Center.
“It’s been one of our goals since we were little and the whole weekend we wanted to just perform to the best of our abilities,” Anna Sanford said. “(Winning a title together) is always something we wanted to do.”
Earning a state runner-up finish in Division I singles was Watterson senior Lauren Ghidotti. She beat Dublin Jerome sophomore Eleanor Bullock 6-2, 7-5 in a semifinal but lost to Cincinnati Ursuline Academy senior Mehvish Safdar 6-1, 6-3 in the final.
Safdar also won a state doubles title as a freshman, the state singles championship as a sophomore and was third at state in singles a year ago.
In the final, Ghidotti broke Safdar’s serve to cut it to 4-3, but Safdar broke Ghidotti’s ensuing serve and served out the match with a love game.
“(Ghidotti) played a great player and there were a lot of great points,” Watterson coach Susan Weil said. “I thought Lauren played her very well.”
Also in Division I doubles, Pickerington Central juniors Isis Thomas and Kyah Thomas lost to Abele and Skwara 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 in a semifinal and beat Toledo Notre Dame Academy’s Alicia Nahhas and Teagan McNamara 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 to take third.
