Kara Riggs has been awarded the $500 2008 Delaware County Master Gardener Association scholarship.

Riggs, a Big Walnut High School graduate, is a sophomore at The Ohio State University, where she is studying plant health management.

In three of her five college quarters, Riggs has been named to the dean's list, including the quarter she spent studying the sociology of rural Brazil and Brazilian agriculture at the University of Sao Paulo.

This summer, she will complete her internship with Dr. Terrence Graham and will present her research at the Centennial Meeting of the American Phytopathological Society in Minneapolis.

The scholarship is awarded annually to a Delaware County resident pursuing or planning to pursue a career in horticulture, agriculture or a related field.

The OSU Master Gardener program is a statewide network of volunteer education, leadership development and consumer horticulture education delivery system that maximizes human, material and natural resources.
