Although ThisWeek Community Newspapers has been delivered to your home for several years, we in the sports department felt a bit like a first-year school at the beginning of the high school football season last fall.

The week of the opening games, we debuted Friday Night Live, which provided viewers to our Web site not only the most comprehensive coverage of central Ohio high school football, but also the first. Game stories and photographs were available the night of the game.

We are very proud of what we accomplished, but in the second season expectations have risen, and it's our goal to meet them.

Here's what we're looking to improve upon from last year:

•Game of the Week: A preview of the must-see game will be available Wednesdays, and a recap -- with comments from both teams --Êwill be posted the night of the game and run through the next Tuesday. Coverage also includes video and a photo slide show.

•Other games: We do plenty with the signature game each week, but we don't neglect the others. Previews of these games also are posted each Wednesday and recaps -- again with comments from both teams --Êwill be available the night of the game. Photographs from our award-winning staff will accompany almost every game story.

Note from the business department: All photographs are available for purchase on our Web site.

•Who's No. 1: Check out our Super 7 poll, which will be posted on Mondays. Pickerington Central is No. 1 in the preseason poll. Can the Tigers go wire-to-wire like Dublin Coffman did last season?

•Contests: Correctly guess the outcomes of our top 10 games and one of several prizes could be yours.

•Scores: Our ticker provides results from area games.

•Podcasts: One of the more popular features on the site. Our sportswriters provide previews of the area's top games each Tuesday. Can't make the game? Tune in for halftime updates of as many as 20 games. Within an hour of the game's conclusion, recaps of the games are available for your listening pleasure.

What's new? A few of the items we've added to Friday Night Live started with its basketball counterpart, Hoop it Up:

•Player of the week: Each Monday, we will announce the top player from the previous Friday's games. We will have a short description of his accomplishments as well as a video.

•Coaches corner: A question-and-answer session with area coaches, updated each Monday.

•Blog: Blogging & Tackling will be quick hits about the high school football scene. It's worth noting that there also will be a blog for all other sports called Off the Grid.

And then there are a couple that are new items:

•We're on TV: Tune in to "ThisWeek in Sports" on Time Warner Local on Demand Channel 1111. Joining me will be sportswriters Don Delco, Anders Larson and Jeremy Stewart. The weekly show will be available every Tuesday.

•Your own page: Every team will have a page on our site. Visit for stories, pictures and standings.

Finally, because our papers are delivered every Thursday, our print coverage will focus on previews of Friday's games so you will need to visit our Web site for game recaps.

This is in keeping with our philosophy that while we are a weekly print publication, we also are a daily Web site.

Let me know what you think. Your comments, questions and ideas are welcome.

I'm available at (740) 888-6054 or lcochran@thisweeknews.com. I look forward to hearing from you. And remember to make Friday Night Live your first stop for high school football.
