Dempsey Middle School eighth-grader Spencer Roesch won the school's geography bee and will advance to state competition.

He is the son of James and Jaci Roesch.

The school competition was the first round of the 21st annual National Geographic Bee, sponsored by the National Geographic Society. Questions at the school level are answered verbally. At the state level, competitors are required to take a written test, offered in April. No more than 100 students from Ohio are eligible to compete at the state level.

The bee, which is open to all seventh- and eighth-grade students at Dempsey, had 17 participants this year.

Seventh-grader Jacob Rumbalski placed second, and Kyle Hardison, also in seventh grade, placed third. Jacob is the son of David and Suzanne Rumbalski, and Kyle is the son of Dan and Dee Hardison.
