The Delaware County District Library has added the latest technology to its collection of audiobooks.

"Playaways" are lightweight, preloaded, digital audiobooks in the format of what amounts to an MP3 player: a self-contained, portable unit that can be strapped around the neck or to a belt buckle.

Like MP3 players, Playaways need an external speaker or a set of earphones. Listeners can use their own -- Playaways have a universal headphone jack -- or purchase a set of earbuds from the library for $3.

Listeners can adjust the speed of the narrator's voice, move ahead, reverse chapters, adjust the volume and even turn the unit off and back on without losing their place.

While supplies last, the library is giving away lanyards to patrons who check out Playaways.

Currently, the Playaway display is at the main library only. As the collection grows, Playaways also will be available at the Powell and Ostrander branches.
