A drive-through fantasy that could light up your holidays

By ThisWeek Community News  •
Entering its 10th year, the Fantasy of Lights - a drive-through holiday display - offers a relaxing way to appreciate holiday lights, said event organizer Steve Cross.

Visitors can drive through the decorated lanes of Alum Creek State Park Marina from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20 to Jan. 2. The display is closed Dec. 31.
The marina is on Hollenback Road, Delaware, off Old State Road, about four miles north of Polaris Parkway.

Each year, proceeds from Fantasy of Lights benefit Recreation Unlimited, a not-for-profit organization in Delaware County that provides recreational opportunities for people with physical and developmental disabilities and people with health concerns.

"Last year it raised $8,500 for us," said Paul Huttlin, Recreation Unlimited executive director. "Over the past nine years we've received $60,000. This comes as a year-end donation. It's a wonderful thing to receive."

Huttlin said the display also creates public awareness of the organization because information about Recreation Unlimited appears on a brochure that each vehicle receives on entering.

Cross expects about 10,000 vehicles to visit the display this year. He recommends avoiding lines and coming early, noting that the week of Christmas is always the busiest.

Of the 140 displays, Cross best likes the one with the word "peace" between two large silver bells and accented with poinsettias.

A lot of visitors like the S.S. Santa, which is the tallest display, Cross said. The tunnel of lights is another favorite.

"I try to add a few new things every year," he said. "This year we've added the biggest display we've ever had - 140-foot long and 30-foot high. It's a winter scene with houses."

Cross said he doesn't know how many lights are in the display - maybe a million or two because "nobody's willing to count them." However, this year he ordered 20,000 replacement bulbs.

The cost to enter is $10 per car most days; $15 per car Dec. 21-24; $20 for limos, vans, and motor homes; $30 for motor coaches up to 30 people; and $60 for buses and large motor coaches.

Free cookies and hot chocolate are available in the marina store. Santa will be present for photos which cost $5.

Proceeds from the display also benefit the Alum Creek Sailing Association and Alum Creek Dog Park.
