Church designs concerts to encourage interaction
There's nothing like hearing your favorite oldies tune played by a live band in the heat of a summer night.
This weekend marks the latest show in the Concerts on the Square series, hosted by Vineyard Church of Delaware County. The concerts take place on Sunbury's Village Square.
Two Bricks Shy will play popular music from the 1950s to the current day at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, for around two hours.
Church organizers said the shows are family-friendly events and added concert-goers should bring a blanket, lawn chair and a picnic dinner.
Vicky Kurzenknabe, administrative assistant at the church, said the Vineyard began the series as a way to reach out to the community.
"The idea is to bring the community together regardless of church membership," she said. "We just want to have a presence in the community."
Although it is an outdoor concert, the volume is kept low enough to encourage people to talk to one another, she said.
"We want people to have conversations," Kurzenknabe said. "It's not a time to sit in silence, but a time to enjoy each other."
She said the church also encourages people to support the local businesses around the square.
"There are plenty of places to get food and bring to the concert," she said. "A lot of people buy pizza and ice cream and bring it to the square."
Although the Vineyard is a Christian church, the bands selected for the concerts are not Christian bands nor do they play music that is Christian in nature.
"We celebrate all kinds of music; it doesn't have to be Christian," Kurzenknabe said. "Our intention is to be a part of the community, reach out and love people."
The pastor in charge of the event, Michael Hansen, always invites people to visit the church after the concert is over, she said.
"We welcome people to stop by and check the church out. We are right outside Sunbury, so it's close to the people who will be coming to the concert," Kurzenknabe said.
The next concert in the series is scheduled for Sept. 9 and will feature a reggae band and a chili cook-off.
