Construction of Ohio's first Cabela's store is on track for a spring opening, officials say.
No firm date has been set for the grand opening of the outdoor retailer's store at Gemini Parkway and Interstate 71, but the company plans to open it in "early spring," said Franz Geiger, managing director with real estate developer NP Limited Partnership.
"If you look at the exterior, it's really taking shape," Geiger said. "They're putting in the landscaping and they're moving at a fast pace, but there's a lot that needs to be done on the inside of the store."
"It could open as early as March," he added.
Cabela's sells a wide range of hunting, fishing, camping and boating equipment and apparel.
The new 80,000-square-foot store is located at the northeast corner of Gemini Parkway and Lyra Drive in the Polaris Centers development.
It's the first Cabela's store in Ohio. Currently, the nearest locations are in Triadelphia, W.V., near Wheeling, and Dundee, Mich., just north of Toledo.
It will feature the store's signature indoor mountain replica, a massive sculpture topped with mounted North American game animals, said Cabela's spokes-man Wes Remmer.
"You'll see everything from pheasants to grizzly bears," Remmer said. "It's one of the things that makes it an interesting experience just coming into the store."
The store also will feature a 5,575-gallon aquarium stocked with native fish.
An indoor archery range will let shoppers test their aim before they buy. Shoppers can shoot targets with any bow they like before purchasing it.
Meanwhile, firearms fans can see collectible and antique weapons in the store's gun library.
"It's like a miniature museum for gun aficionados," Remmer said.
The store will introduce the Bargain Cave, an area featuring discounted products and special deals.
Shoppers also can grab a bite to eat at the store's deli.
Remmer said the store will create about 175 full- and part-time jobs and is "poised for a great opening."
"We're excited to come to Ohio," he said. "We know we have a ton of loyal customers in the area so we can't wait to get the outdoor enthusiasts in the area into our store."
