Almost two years after the opening of the Delaware Community Center YMCA, construction on the adjoining Ohio National Guard building is under way.
In partnership with the city of Delaware and the YMCA, the National Guard broke ground on the private training facility Friday, Aug. 23.
The 65,000-square-foot addition that will remain mostly private will feature a drill floor, administrative offices, locker rooms, a library and learning center, vehicle work bays and a kitchen and dining room.
The community center's eight-lane pool, gymnasium and running track are amenities the Ohio National Guard likely will take the advantage of during training.
A description of the building on the Poggmeyer Design Group's website says there will be enough room to accommodate 200 Ohio National Guard personnel, who will travel to the training facility for drills.
The total cost of the YMCA and training center is $30 million, which has been funded partly with money generated by a 0.15 percent income tax increase approved by voters in 2008.
