Council for Older Adults pays tribute to volunteers

The Council for Older Adults of Delaware County held its annual volunteer recognition event April 10.

More than 250 supporters attended the event to honor the council's team of more than 800 volunteers.

Tracey Merrin, Doneta Stoner, Sandra Stults and Mary K. Thompson were recognized for 20 years of service to the council. Maxine Patterson, Roger VanSickle and Shirley VanSickle received recognition for 15 years of service. The council also recognized 11 volunteers for 10 years of service, and 107 volunteers for five years of service.

Special recognition went to: Bob Backus (Above and Beyond Award); Dennis Howe (Leaping into Action Award); Jim Decker (Consistent Commitment Award); and Dottie Haggard (There is No "I" in Team Award).

A total of 153 volunteers who each have given more than 500 hours of service were honored as well, including Dee Watren with 5,000 hours and Shirley Philpott with 4,000 hours.

Alum Creek Dog Park was recognized as the Volunteer Business of the Year, and the Student Award was presented to Mahsa Ghassab.

Volunteers assist with a variety of programs, including Meals On Wheels, office support, transportation, home chores, medical supply deliveries and special events. For more information about volunteer opportunities, call the council office at 740-363-6677.
