Ohio Wesleyan University's Perkins Observatory will host three daytime "Celebration of the Sun" events in July.
The Saturday events will begin at 4 p.m. July 12, 19 and 26, at the observatory, 3199 Columbus Pike (U.S. 23), Delaware.
The Celebration of the Sun series replaces Perkins' Friday night programs in July, when the days are longer. Perkins staff and volunteers will help guests to observe sunspots and solar prominences -- explosions on the sun's surface. Observatory Director Tom Burns warns that looking at the sun requires proper eye protection and the supervision of trained astronomers. Other activities planned for the series include rocket launches, sundial demonstrations, views of a 1,000-yard model of the solar system, observatory tours and of course the Perkins ghost story.
Reservations are strongly recommended for all Perkins Observatory programs. Tickets purchased in advance are $8 general admission; $6 for children age 17 and younger; and $6 for senior citizens (age 62 and older). At the door, tickets are $2 more.
