Basketball teams are ready for tourney openers
In preparation for its postseason opener, the Delaware Christian School girls basketball team has been put through coach Jackie Boggs’ version of basic training since the end of the regular season Feb. 11.
The Eagles hope the workouts will pay dividends when they face seventh-seeded Fisher Catholic in the second round of the Division IV district tournament at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Westerville Central.
“The last time we had this much time off was around the holidays when we lost three straight games,” said Boggs, whose team has a first-round bye. “This time, I’m bringing in extra bodies and the starters are going full court against 10 defenders. We’re working hard on conditioning and on staying sharp with basketball fundamentals.”
Delaware Christian played three games between Dec. 10 and Jan. 6, and the three-game losing streak leveled the Eagles’ record to 4-4 at that time. The Eagles, who are seeded ninth, finished the regular season 13-7.
Fisher Catholic is 11-9 and finished 7-7 in the MSL-Cardinal Division. The contest is a rematch of last year’s second-round game in which the seventh-seeded Eagles beat the eighth-seeded Irish 49-45 before losing to top-seeded Harvest Prep 70-42.
“They shoot a lot of 3s but are a little more physical than when we played them last season,” Boggs said. “I’ve been told they don’t handle pressure well this season. We’ll probably start in a 3-2 zone defense to defend the perimeter, and we’re working hard at really boxing out from that. We also want to push the ball up the floor to get them in foul trouble or get some easy looks.”
The winner will play Marion Catholic, Northside Christian or fifth-seeded Worthington Christian in district semifinal at 6 p.m. Feb. 29 at Westerville Central.
Delaware Christian, which has won four in a row, defeated Marion Catholic 79-40 on Feb. 9 as Haley Kirby scored 35 points.
Kirby set the program’s career scoring record in a 56-34 victory over Madison Christian on Feb. 3. She has 1,222 career points.
“Before the Marion Catholic game, her career high in a game was 31,” Boggs said. “I’ve teased her about that for a while, because my career game was 33 points at Hudson (N.Y.) High School. I told her if she ever reached 32, I would pull her out. So when she had 32 against Marion Catholic, I sent someone to the scorer’s table as a joke. She yelled over and said she wasn’t coming out of the game. She drained a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left.”
Brenna McCullough had 16 points against Marion Catholic and a career-high 28 in an 85-25 win Feb. 11 against Patriot Academy. Boggs also said she has been pleased with the recent play of Sarah Harp, Emily Kirkham and Katie Morgan.
“Sarah had 14 points, 16 assists and 13 steals against Patriot, and that was fun because it was senior night and she has always taken a back seat to Haley in stats but had a tremendous game,” Boggs said. “She also had 10 assists and 10 steals against Marion Catholic.
“Emily Kirkham has really turned it on as well and Katie Morgan is playing real well keeping the turnovers low and getting the ball to open people.”
The Eagles finished fourth in the MOCAL at 6-6, behind Tree of Life (12-0), Fairfield Christian (9-3) and Gahanna Christian (7-5) and ahead of Grove City Christian (4-8), Granville Christian (3-9) and Madison Christian (1-11).
•The boys basketball team opens the Division IV district tournament against Gahanna Christian in the second round at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Granville.
The Eagles won both meetings in MOCAL play, 64-60 on Dec. 13 and 61-58 on Jan. 21.
“They were two tight games,” coach Matt Moore said. “They shoot it well. In the first game, Keegan Parsons, a 6-foot-7 wing or small forward, had 16 points at halftime and finished with 27. ... In the second game, Jeffrey Copley and MacGregor Roberts defended him and limited him to six points. He was frustrated.
“We’ll have to stop him because he’s the focal part of their offense. They made eight 3s in the second meeting, four by Caleb McLaughlin, so we’ll have to try to deny things on the perimeter as well and then keep Parsons off the boards.”
Delaware Christian, which was 13-6 overall before closing the regular season Feb. 17 against Shekinah Christian, is seeded ninth. Gahanna Christian, which was 10-9 overall, is seeded 10th.
The Eagles finished 7-5 in the MOCAL to tie Gahanna Christian for third behind Fairfield Christian (12-0) and Tree of Life (9-3).
