Girls team to face top-seeded Newark Catholic


The Delaware Christian School girls basketball team opened the Division IV district tournament Feb. 19 with a 49-46 win over 10th-seeded Tree of Life in the second round.

The ninth-seeded Eagles, who had a first-round bye, improved to 16-7 and advanced to play top-seeded Newark Catholic in a district semifinal Thursday, Feb. 27, at Whitehall. The Green Wave defeated Shekinah Christian 70-35 on Feb. 20.

The semifinal winner will face fourth-seeded Fairfield Christian, sixth-seeded Berne Union or 17th-seeded East Knox in a district final Saturday, March 1, at Whitehall.

Delaware Christian did not play Newark Catholic during the regular season. The Eagles defeated Berne Union 51-46 in their regular-season finale Feb. 15 but have not played Fairfield Christian or East Knox.

Katie Morgan had a team-high 16 points against Tree of Life.

Bethany Kuykendall scored 15 and Emily Cornelius and Erin McCullough added 10 and eight , respectively, for the Eagles.

Delaware Christian had split a pair of games against Tree of Life during the regular season in MOCAL play, winning 46-40 on Dec. 20 and losing 39-26 on Jan. 23.

The Eagles went 4-2 in the MOCAL to place second behind Granville Christian (5-1) and ahead of Tree of Life (3-3) and Madison Christian (0-6).

Boys basketball team eyes tourney opener

The boys basketball team is preparing to open Division IV district tournament play Wednesday, Feb. 26.

Delaware Christian, which is seeded 20th of 21 teams and had a first-round bye, will play at second-seeded Newark Catholic or at 19th-seeded Millersport in the second round. The winner advances to a district semifinal, where it will face sixth-seeded Gahanna Christian or 11th-seeded Fisher Catholic on March 3 at Reynoldsburg.

The Eagles did not play Newark Catholic or Millersport during the regular season.

Delaware Christian closed the regular season Feb. 18 with a 63-47 loss to Sparta Highland to drop to 6-15 and snap a two-game winning streak. The Eagles had won four of their previous five games before falling to the Fighting Scots.

Austin Roden had 18 points against Highland. Wes Blakemore scored 12 and Ben Evans added 11.

Delaware Christian defeated Madison Christian 54-38 on Feb. 17 behind 16 points from Roden and 13 from Evans to finish 2-6 in the MOCAL.

Gahanna Christian won the league title at 8-0.
