Work at the Post Road and Commerce Parkway intersection will begin after the Dublin Irish Festival and close one entrance to the Dublin Community Recreation Center until at least Sept. 30.

"This is sort of another portion of the master plan to expand Coffman Park," said Michael Racey, Dublin community relations specialist. "Part of the plan included vacating a portion of Post Road at Emerald Parkway. This is the next step of the plan."

The project will give residents easier access to the recreation center and Coffman Park, he said.

"The problem is that Commerce Parkway takes a weird 's' curve," Racey said. "We will round Post Road to follow Commerce Parkway. The entrance to the recreation center will 't' with the curve, which will make a better intersection.

"The new intersection will make it easier. People won't have to do the little 's' curve from Commerce Parkway to Post Road."

According to a letter from city engineer Paul Hammersmith to residents affected by the construction, the work "will bring a long-term benefit to our parks system and immediate operational improvement to the Emerald Parkway and Post Road intersection."

Dublin City Council approved the work at its June 1 meeting; bids for the project came in 23 percent below estimates.

The Shelley Co. was awarded the project for $499,169.

The roadwork will begin after crews finish taking down Irish festival exhibits, Racey said.

"We're doing it after the Irish festival because the Coffman Park drive will be shut down," he said. "We have to wait for festival tear down to begin. We won't start until we get the Coffman Park drive back up."

With the Post Road entrance closed, Racey said the Coffman Park drive would be the only way to access the recreation center during the construction. The roadwork is expected to last until Sept. 30, weather permitting.

Access to Post Road from Perimeter Drive will be maintained at Discovery Boulevard and Holt Drive during the construction, according to Hammersmith.
