New coffee shop now open in Historic Dublin
Janet Antauer's dream came true when she opened the doors of Java Jan's last Friday in Historic Dublin.
Although she worked in The Columbus Dispatch advertising department for 18 years and also spent time in pharmaceutical sales, Antauer spent the past two years working with coffee -- selling Java Jan products at festivals, markets and other events.
A faithful customer of her booth at the Worthington Winter Market helped her find her new home at 16 N. High St. next to Our CupCakery.
Antauer said Triad Architects president Peter Macrae always asked when she was getting a storefront, and she eventually took him up on his offer to help find some space.
"He knew Linda (Kick, owner of Our CupCakery) and she was looking for a coffee business," Antauer said.
Antauer took a spot in the same building that houses Our CupCakery, and after about five weeks of remodeling, the coffee shop opened.
Kick said Java Jan's is a perfect fit. Her previous location on South High Street hosted a coffee shop, and Kick said she's always wanted to add a coffee component to her new store. "When I was looking for a new space I thought that (coffee and cupcakes) would be a good marriage," she said.
Kick said she looked for a local coffee business and couldn't get much more local than Antauer, an 11-year Dublin resident.
Kick will provide cupcakes, cookies, muffins and other bakery treats for Java Jan's, which is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays.
The businesses also will pair flavors to match the season. Kick said she's currently offering gingerbread cupcakes to go with a gingerbread drink at Java Jan's.
Antauer, who carries roasted coffees that include Highlander Grog -- a favorite among customers -- macadamia nut, chocolate raspberry, pumpkin spice and southern pecan, gets her coffee from two private roasters.
In addition to a variety of coffee drinks such as espresso, frappes and mochas, Java Jan's also offers hot cocoa, tea, smoothies and protein shakes. Antauer said coffee lovers can also buy beans to make fresh coffee at home.
Although her coffee shop has been open less than a week, Antauer said the reception has been good and many people have wandered in off the street.
"This is such a quaint little area," she said. "It is the perfect location."
Java Jan's has Wi-Fi and parking is behind the building. The business also offers meeting space on the second floor that includes coffee service and some catering.
