The Greater Powell Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its new event "Taste of Powell" from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, April 29, at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Waters Edge Events Park, 9990 Riverside Drive.

Participants at the casual event will sample menu items from 16 area food establishments, said Caroline Clabaugh, chamber spokesperson. Jazz band Arnett Howard & Friends will perform at the event.

The growth in southern Dela-ware County has increased the number of food establishments including restaurants, banquet facilities and bakeries, said Becky Frash, chamber member and an event organizer. The event will provide the opportunity for residents to see the variety of cuisine available locally, she said.

"We have a great variety of food establishments that are very customer- and family-focused, and we need to support our local establishments," Frash said. "We have so much right here in our area and we want to spotlight what is available here."

The event also will serve as a fundraiser for the chamber and help it continue with its community involvement.

Frash hopes to see the event become an annual program.

Participating food establishments will include Bachman's Cake Shoppe, Bridgewater Banquet & Conference Center, Costco, Culver's of Powell, Dream Dinners, Easy Street Café, Flyers Pizza, Gooseneck Tavern, Greek Express, Jet's Pizza, Kogen's Restaurant, Liberty Tavern, Local Roots, Luce, Scioto Reserve and the Lost Shepherd Tavern, Frash said.

Representatives from the online group TasteCasting.com also will attend the event, Frash said. "The TasteCasting team attends, tastes, tweets, and posts the stories, videos, pictures to TasteCasting.com and promotes the establishment across their social media networks" at no cost to the establishments, the group's Web site says.

Tickets are being sold only in advance, said Frash. Attendance is limited to 500. Tickets cost $25 per person and include food, entertainment and parking. Beverages are not included. Tickets can be ordered at www.powellchamber.com or purchased at three Powell area restaurants -- Local Roots, 15 E. Olentangy St.; Jet's Pizza, 8882 Moreland Ave.; and Culver's, 4137 Powell Road.
