The Grounds of Remembrance has become the centerpiece of Dublin's celebration of Memorial Day.

The memorial in Dublin Veterans Park, dedicated on Memorial Day last year, will be the site Monday of speeches and a community picnic.

Lt. Col. Jeff Noble, who is organizing the Memorial Day events for Dublin's American Legion Post 800 and VFW Post 10691, said the addition of the Grounds of Remembrance and the picnic lunch should help attract more people.

"We're certainly trying to expand this to all of the community," he said.

But the day's message remains unchanged.

"Memorial Day says it all," Noble said. "It's a time to remember those who gave their lives for our liberties and freedom, so we strongly believe in commemorating appropriately."

Memorial Day activities will begin as usual at 11 a.m. at Bridge Point Plaza on the northeast corner of state Route 161 and Riverside Drive, with a processional across the bridge. The crowd will pause in the middle of the bridge to toss a commemorative wreath into the Scioto River to honor deceased Navy veterans. The procession then proceeds to the Dublin Cemetery.

Noble said military vehicles will be included in this year's parade across the bridge.

The ceremony at the cemetery will include a prayer, 21-gun salute, the playing of taps and planting of flags on the graves of veterans.

"Then we'll go across the street and have some speeches at the loggia (of the Grounds of Remembrance)," Noble said.

A piper will lead the crowd across West Bridge Street to the Grounds of Remembrance, where Boy Scouts will assist senior citizens up the path, Noble said.

Speeches at the Grounds of Remembrance are slated to begin at noon. Local lawmakers will speak along with four Dublin high school students. The candidates for Buckeye Boys and Girls State will speak on Memorial Day and what it means to them, Noble said.

A flyover also is in the works. Noble said he is trying to arrange for fighter planes to fly over the site at 12:30 p.m., after which the picnic will begin, wrapping up the celebration.
